Winnie the Pooh Banned from Turkish TV

Turkish public television station TRT is banning “Winnie The Pooh” from the airwaves because one of the characters is a pig, seen as an unclean creature in Islamic culture. It is not the first cartoon to be banned because of this belief.

Some employees are complaining about key posts being filled at the station by ruling party members. Other stations in the country do air Winnie The Pooh cartoons, and videos of them can still be purchased.

In a strictly secular country, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been under fire recently for trying to raise Islam’s profile in Turkey. He is a member of the Justice and Development Party, a variation of a now-banned Islamic movement.
