As an exchange of words between Turkish and the European Union officials deepened the crisis over Turkey’s refusal to allow the Greek Cypriot administration to benefit from its ports, a message of warning was delivered from officials in Washington to those in Brussels, urging them to be helpful in their relations with Turkish officials.

Including the administration in South Cyprus, some other European Union members were given a recommendation from the US administration to be more constructive during certain periods of particular importance in Turkey’s march toward a place in the EU, said Sean McCormack, a spokesman for the Secretary of State.

Asked by a Greek reporter to comment upon policies of the United States on Cyprus, the spokesman said that the administration in Washington remains firm in its policies on Cyprus, and went on to say in summary as follows:

The United States administration lends support to the Turkish struggle for admission into the EU insofar as the right to the final say belongs both to Turkey and to the EU.

The United States administration makes a call for policies from EU officials to be more positive at certain moments of crisis in talks with the Turkish officials; it also urges for flexibility in negotiations between both EU and Turkish officials to reach an agreement.
