Nalbandian battles, Kiefer retires

Third seed David Nalbandian avoided an early exit on Friday as he battled back from a two-set deficit before triumphing over Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov in five sets.

The 24-year-old Argentinian eventually got rid of his opponent 2-6 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-2 after three hours and 11 minutes of play.

Nalbandian, whose best record here in Paris is a semi-final in 2004, took an early lead in the final rubber by breaking his rival.

Serving out for the match at 5-2 the Argentinian, a Wimbledon finalist in 2002, missed out on three match points before conceding his serve.

At 5-4 Nalbandian earned another two match points and converted on his first chance when Tursunov’s backhand landed wide.

Nicolas Kiefer retired from the French Open after injury.

The German 13th seed was playing Czech Tomas Berdych (20) in the last 32 when he suffered a pain in his left wrist and found himself unable to continue.

Berdych had won the first set 6-1 before Kiefer pulled out.
