Vartkes Mahdessian, a successful businessman, is the new Armenian deputy in the Cyprus parliament, after defeating the incumbent with 899 votes or 53% on Sunday.

Transitional representative Dr Vahakn Atamyan, sponsored by the supporters of the closure of the Melkonian — AGBU Cyprus, AGBU NY, Ramgavars, AKEL-Shahoumians — as well as the Hunchak party of Cyprus, only gained 40 new votes from the interim elections last October to fill the seat after Bedros Kalaydjian died in September. His total this time round reached 810 votes or 47%.

Mahdessian, however, achieved a major turnaround gaining 250 new votes, enough to overturn last October?s result when fellow-AYMA candidate Antranik Ashdjian got 43%. Mahdessian has pledged to work to reunite the community, a promise made but not achieved by any of his predecessors in the past 20 years.

He also pledged to work harder to revive the “Melkonian crisis” that had been kept quiet by the AGBU/Ramgavar leaders in Cyprus. In his first clear-cut statement a week before the elections, Mahdessian praised the leadership of the Patriarch of Bolis in the whole battle to save the school, while he also said he wanted to work closer with the Melkonian alumni.

What we as Worldwide Alumni now want is for Vartkes Mahdessian to keep his word and rally the Melkoniantsis around him to work in one voice. We must first re-establish our own unity among ourselves in order not to allow others to try to demoralise or break us up again.

We expect him to be more pro-active as he has no obligations to individuals or organisations or even AGBU NY representatives in Cyprus.

He must also stick to his main policy statement of “Unity within the community” and “transparency” because now is the time to ask all the awkward questions:

Who gets what cut from the Melkonian Centre rental income?
Why have the accounts always been kept secret?

Who has been stealing from the Melkonian Founders? Fund (himnatram)?

Where does AGBU-Ararat get its funding from? What other favours were granted by the government to the non-Armenian Futsal team?

Why is it being allowed for a Melkonian Summer School to operate where the school is supposed to be closed? Who collects the money here? Is it a legitimate business?

Who is still being employed by the Melkonian Interim Programme & what is this project after all?
