After fiery debates the French National Assembly yesterday shelved a contentious bill that criminalizes any denial of an alleged Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, a move that is certain to please Ankara.
Turkey urged France, after the parliamentary debate, to abandon plans to penalize denial of the alleged genocide and to back a joint study of the allegations by academics.
“Our expectation is that France will avoid bringing the proposal to the agenda of the French parliament again,” said a statement released by the Foreign Ministry.
The French government stood up to oppose the bill during the debates, with Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy saying the proposal would be seen as “an unfriendly gesture by the vast majority of the Turkish people.”
