NGO SAYS ARMENIA MUST SEND TROOPS TO GEORGIA TO PROTECT ETHNIC ARMENIANS

YEREVAN, MARCH 14, ARMENPRESS; An Armenian non-governmental organization, called Javakhk Council (it comprises 15 NGOs) alleged today that Turkey and Azerbaijan might be playing a role in escalation of tension in a southern Georgian province of Javakheti-Samtskhe that has a majority of ethnic Armenian population.

A statement it issued today says the primary responsibility for inter-ethnic tension in the region lie, however, with central authorities in Tbilisi and the Georgian Orthodox Church. Speaking to a news conference, representatives of Javakhk Council urged the Armenian authorities to act swiftly to prevent further exacerbation of the situation in that region. The statement demands that the governments of Georgia and Armenia develop a plan of quick actions to radically change the situation in the region.

Hrazdan Madoyan, a member of the Javakhk Council, argued that Armenian authorities should press for holding a referendum in the region to learn whether its Armenian population wants an autonomy status within Georgia. He said Armenia should also demand that all Armenian-populated regions in southern Georgia close to Javakheti must be incorporated in it and argued that Armenia must send its troops to the region if Georgia refused to accept these proposals.

The tension began running high in this region after a young Armenian man was stabbed to death by a group of ethnic Georgians in Tsalka on March 9.
