Oskanian, Bryza discuss bilateral, regional issues

Armenian foreign affairs minister Vartan Oskanian has received today Matthew J. Bryza, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, who has arrived here on a brief visit.

The foreign ministry said in the course of the meeting the parties discussed in detail a wide scope of bilateral and regional issues. Oskanian commended the US government’s continued assistance to Armenia to help it strengthen democracy, human rights and carry on economic and political reforms. Oskanian and Bryza discussed also a set of details concerning US government bulky additional aid to Armenia within the frameworks of the Millennium Challenges Account program.

Another focus in the meeting was diversification of Armenia’s energy sector. Oskanian also presented Armenia’s cooperation with NATO emphasizing Armenia’s Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) with the Alliance. Also discussed was the current state of talks over the Karabakh conflict.

Matthew J. Bryza assumed his duties as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs in June 2005. In this capacity, his primary responsibility is policy oversight and management of relations with countries in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Southern Europe regions. He also works with our Special Negotiator for Eurasian Conflicts to advance peaceful settlement of regional conflicts in Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia and to advance U.S. energy policy in the regions surrounding the Black and Caspian Seas.
