ARMENIANS IN JAVAKHETI WANT ARMENIAN TO BECOME OFFICIAL LANGUAGE

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 28, ARMENPRESS: The council of non-governmental organizations in Georgia’s predominantly Armenian-populated region of Javakheti has condemned central authorities in Tbilisi for revoking the authorities of local ethnic Armenian judges under the pretext that they do not speak Georgian.

A local A-Info news agency quoted from a statement adopted by the gathering saying that the decision was yet another evidence of central Georgian authorities’ policy to sack all Armenian officials in the region and replace them with ethnic Georgians.

The gathering decided that the organizations should double their efforts to raise this issue with international organizations and press for granting the Armenian language in the region the status of a state, official language, citing the promises of the authorities in Tbilisi to make Abkhazian an official language in Abkhazia if it agrees to reunite with the rest of Georgia
