THE INFORMATION ACTIVITY OF BANKS TENDS TO REDUCE IN THE ARMENIAN PRESS IN 2005

YEREVAN, February 14. /ARKA/. The information activity of banks tended to reduce in the Armenian press in 2005. According to the analysis of ARKA, in 2005, the activity of banks was the lowest for all 7 years of making a press rating (from 1999 to 2005). Most of the banking information was recorded in the press in 2002.

It should be noted that in 1999-2001 about 50 banks were in the banking system of Armenia, however, beginning from 2002 their number reduced.

In 2005, the press rating of ARKA included 21 commercial banks versus 20 ones in 2004.

At that, most of the press entries in the structure of general information of Armenian banks account for the headings “Bank Development Policy”, “Banking Activities in Figures”, as well as “General” (the share of information for each of them makes about 30-40% of annual information). The least volume of information was received for the headings “Clients and Services” and “Opinions and Prognosis about the situation in economy”.

At that, the analysis of press entries for the mentioned 7 years of making press-rating testifies to reduction of the volume of information about bank development policy (the average annual decline of the quantity of press signals for this section made 51%), about innovations in the sphere of servicing clients and banking service (decline over 4,2 times), as well as about numerical indicators of their activity (almost 1,5 decline). At that, heads and personnel of commercial banks share their opinions and prognosis about the situation in the economy (so the number of press -signals on the average grew 1,6 times), and 11,1% growth of general information was recorded.

Summarizing 7-year dynamic of press-entries about Armenia banks, one may conclude that the most active communication policy is pursued by Armeconombank, Conversebank, ACBA, Ardshininvestbank, as well as HSBC Bank Armenia and “Anelik Bank”.

Less active from the standpoint of informing the press about their activity are Areximbank, Armenian Development Bank, Inecobank, Unibank, Artshakhbank, Cascade Bank (former Emporiki Bank Armenia), as well as new ArmSwissbank.
Among the most closed banks are Mellat Bank, Prometey Bank, ITB “International Trade Bank”, Armimpexbank, Arminvestbank, Ararat Bank (former Armsviaz).

It’s noteworthy that after purchasing 75% of shares of Armsavingsbank by Russian Vneshtorgbank, the information activity of the bank reduced in the Armenia press in 2005. Thus, if in 2001-2004, Armsavingsbank was in the list of the leaders of the annual press rating, then in 2005 as a result of reduction of the volume of press signals Armsavingsbank ranked the 9th in the list.

The opposite is in case with “BTA Investbank”, which before was called an international investment bank. Acquisition of the bank by “TuranAlem Bank” increased the information activity of the BTA Investbank in 2005, as a result of which it was included in the list of banks-leaders, while before it was in the list of the second scores of banks-participants of the Press rating of ARKA.

The press rating of ARKA is calculated not by means of the financial -economic indicators, but by facts of the banking activity, informing about which becomes possible through the mass media. As a result, the higher is the level of actual information about banking activity, the more efficient its communicative policy. When making a press rating, the information characterized as advertisement was not a subject of investigation and analysis. A.H.-0–
