Armenian Democratic Party’s leader Sarkisyan is against peacekeepers’ deployment in Karabakh conflict zone

Yerevan, 12 February 2006 (Regnum – website) – “Iran is not just friendly country to Armenia, it has strategic meaning for us,” stated Armenian Democratic Party’s leader, MP Aram Sarkisyan during a discussion of Armenian-Iran relations in the National Press Club. At the same time, he mentioned, that Armenian foreign policy should be based on its own interests. Super powers’ interests confronted with Iran, and Armenia found itself in strange situation, stressed Sarkisyan. As he is quoted by a REGNUM correspondent as saying, Iran is not indifferent to result of Nagorno Karabakh problem’s solution. “That country stated repeatedly, it disagrees with deployment of third countries’ military contingent, in particular NATO forces in the region. Taking into account the fact, that Karabakh problem’s solution is not fare, Armenia should not allow deployment of peacekeeping contingent in the region,” stressed the Democrats leader, adding that peacekeepers’ deployment would be very profitable for Azerbaijan, because “it hopes for Turkish forces’ presence.”

In his turn, Chairman of the Armenian Christian-Democratic Union, ex-speaker Khosrov Arutyunyan noted, that the region dynamic development will depend on balance of super powers interests. “When interests of several sides confront in the region, its development slows down. Armenia, with its relations to Iran, should contribute to constructive presence of the country in region”, believes Khosrov Arutyunyan. Mentioning question of possible peacekeepers’ deployment, Arutyunyan stressed, that if their presence will be necessary, Armenia shell support deployment of the OSCE troops.
