Possible membership of peacekeeping forces in Nagorno Karabakh: “neither co-chairmen, nor neighbor countries”

Co-chairmen of OSCE Minsk Group on Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement work in confidential conditions, US Ambassador to Armenia John Evans commented on unwillingness of the co-chairmen to speak with the press. “Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement is in a very important stage, and possible, this decision was right”, noted the ambassador.

Mediators in Nagorno Karabakh settlement arrived to Baku from Yerevan on February 2, and conducted meetings with the Armenian president and foreign minister.

According to Evans, the US, working alongside with Russia and France, is trying to find long-term settlement of this problem, and the most difficult is to find a mutually acceptable decision between conflicting sides. Speaking about possible deployment of peacekeepers in the conflict zone, Evans said that it is too early to speak about membership of peacekeeping forces, but format “neither co-chairmen, nor neighbor countries” is possible. It means that forces of Turkey, Georgia and Iran (neighbor countries) and US, Russia and France (co-chairman countries) may not participate in the peacekeeping operation.
