YEREVAN TO HOST MULTINATIONAL RESCUE GAMES

YEREVAN, JANUARY 31, ARMENPRESS; Representatives of 12 NATO member countries and from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UN are in Yerevan taking part in a conference convened by Armenia in cooperation with the European Command of US armed forces to develop a plan of actions for 2006 summer multinational rescue exercises in Armenia.

Speaking to reporters, deputy defense minister of Armenia Arthur Aghabekian said conduction of such exercises promotes raising the level of Armenian experts’ preparedness. The exercises will take place on the site of an air force academy and in some Yerevan districts.

He said rescuers and medics together with representatives of the armed forces and foreign partners will form multinational contingents and will use equipment, particularly, a mobile hospital, that will be delivered by the USA to eliminate the consequences of a simulated earthquake as terrorists will be trying to seize the power and hinder rescue operations.

Aghabekian said about 250 officers and specialists of 20 NATO member countries and its partner countries will take part in the games. Aghabekian said neither Turkey nor Azerbaijan expressed desire to take part in the Yerevan conference.
