21 January 2006 — A 46-strong contingent of Armenian servicemen today left Yerevan for southern Iraq.
This is the third unit sent to serve in Iraq since 2004. The Armenian mission, which usually includes doctors, truck drivers, and explosive experts, serves under the Polish command in what the government describes as a humanitarian mission.
President Robert Kocharian is facing domestic criticism over Armenia’s participation to the U.S.-led military efforts in Iraq. However, the Armenian parliament voted on 8 December to extend the mandate of the troops in Iraq for another year.
