NO INDIVIDUAL OR BIRD SUFFERING FROM AVIAN INFLUENZA IN ARMENIA

YEREVAN, JANUARY 18, ARMENPRESS: Armenian health minister Norayr Davidian announced yesterday there were no individuals or birds suffering from bird flu. He said an inter-agency body, set up by the government is coordinating measures against bird flu by examining passengers arriving from other countries and their luggage.

He said passengers arriving from Turkey and other countries are subjected to strict health and sanitary checks and those bound for Turkey are given special booklets with clear instructions about how to detect symptoms of bird flu. Armenia’s Armavia carrier resumed after New Year holidays regular flights to Istanbul.

An official of the company told Armenpress they have decided to serve only Armenian-made food on its Istanbul-Yerevan flights. Hayk Martirosian from a special commission set up by Armenian poultry farms, told Armenpress the commission is negotiating with Russians on acquisition of a vaccine, reportedly developed by Russian scientists, which they say is very effective to battle the bird flue.
