Armenia Agrees to Pay Double for Russian Gas From

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) – Armenia has reached a tentative agreement with Russia to pay double for its imports of Russian natural gas from April 1, the Caucasus Mountain state’s prime minister said Saturday.

The deal avoids a steep rise in gas costs during the winter for Armenia, which relies entirely on Moscow for its gas supplies.

Russia’s state-controlled natural gas monopoly Gazprom had demanded that Armenia pay US$110 (euro90) per thousand cubic meters from Jan. 1 this year, twice what it now pays, as part of a plan to increase prices for former Soviet republics toward world levels.
