THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS IN KARABAKH PEACE PROCESS IN 2005: ARMENIAN FM

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 29. ARMINFO. There was substantial progress in the Karabakh peace process in 2005, Armenian FM Vardan Oskanyan says in in an interview to Kentron TV channel.

Tangible progress could be seen during the Warsaw and Kazan meetings of the presidents and if this positive trend is continued one can expect deepening of the process and preparations for final resolution in 2006.

Oskanyan says that the possible deployment of international peacekeepers in the Karabakh conflict zone should not be considered from the political point of view as it is early yet to speak about peacekeeping. On the other hand, if the sides want to finalize the problem in 2006, peacekeeping seems to be late. All will depend on the settlement document, its scenario – where to deploy peacekeepers, what countries will take part in the process. This is a hard process. That is why we talk about it beforehand. But we may not need peacekeeping at all, says Oskanyan.

He refuses pointblank to give the details of the negotiating process.

In any case, the solution will be based on concessions. Both political forces and society should believe in and approve it. Oskanyan advises giving up stereotypes – “package” or “phased” settlement scenarios. In any case, the resolution will be complex, he says.
