NATO HOPES ARMENIA, AZERBAIJAN TO REACH ACCORD IN 2006 ON KARABAKH CONFLICT SETTLEMENT

YEREVAN, December 14. /ARKA – RIA Novosti/. NATO hopes Armenia and Azerbaijan to reach an accord in 2006 on Karabakh conflict settlement. Robert Simmons, NATO Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Caucasus and Central Asia, said at a press conference held Wednesday by RIA Novosti that regular meetings between Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents and foreign ministers inspire optimism.

In his words, the two countries’ presidents are set to meet at the beginning of coming year. Simons thinks that now, when referendum in Armenia and parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are already left behind, there is a hope that agreement will be made the next year on Karabakh problem settlement.

He said NATO keeps its eye on OSCE-mediated talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Karabakh conflict. Answering the question is NATO ready to dispatch its forces to the area between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Simons said that NATO is not an active participant in the negotiation process, but observes it from the outside. In his opinion, the conflict sides should decide which peacekeeping forces to deploy there. NATO is in touch of the process, but such kinds of decisions should be made by the sides themselves, Simons said. M.V.–0–
