THE OPPOSITION IS GOING TO SAVE BOTH ARMENIA AND KARABAKH

The Karabakh issue will not be settled in 2006. National Democratic Union (NDU) leader Vazgen Manukyan stated it when addressing the civil meeting organized by united Armenian opposition.

According to RA mass media NDU leader Vazgen Manukyan stressed the problem solution was conditioned only with Armenia’s democratization. However, in his words, RA authorities are not interested in the process of democratization. “They will do what the West will tell them, as they wish to keep power. They think: let us do what the West says, and there will be some kind of symmetry between Armenia and Azerbaijan in democracy. We have absolute “symmetry” with Azerbaijan in democracy”, ironically stated Vazgen Manukyan. “We, Armenians, were strong when we were free and just, when we were citizens”, noted he.

Thus, according to the Armenian oppositionist, “distorting the previous elections’ results, as well as the outcomes of a referendum on Constitutional amendments” the authorities excluded the possibility of Karabakh conflict settlement favorable for the Armenian party. “They say they will settle the Karabakh issue in 2006. It is a lie. Not a single issue will be settled in 2006. Aliyev and Kocharyan just throw dust in the West’s eyes hinting that in case they keep power they will settle the issue. Parliamentary and Presidential elections are to be held in Armenia in the near future, as well as Presidential elections in Azerbaijan, so the issue will be frozen again. That is the situation”, said Vazgen Manukyan addressing the audience.

According to the politician, in the years of Karabakh movement Armenia strengthened its positions striving for independence, establishment of a free civil society and free economic system. “Now, speculating with the Karabakh issue, they lead the country to the utter destruction”, stated National Democratic Union leader Vazgen Manukyan. The oppositionist is sure Azerbaijan will try to settle the Karabakh issue by military way sooner or later. “How will our weakened state not having a normal army, police and a nation to trust its leadership, wage war and win?” wonders Vazgen Manukyan. In his opinion, the country’s future is vague. “The situation is much more serious than it seems. Armenia is going to be destructed. An explosion from inside should take place, otherwise we’ll be forced to the conflict settlement from outside”, stated NDU leader. In his words, only the Karabakh issue can unite Armenian nation again and inspire Armenians to struggle against the present regime.

‘’17 + 1’’bloc, which comprises a number of RA opposition parties, organized a civil meeting in the Cinema House to announce a new action plan. According to the oppositionists, a new movement, like Movement – 88, should be established in the name of Armenia’s salvation. However, according to an academician Rafael Ghazaryan, in 1988 the movement was aimed at Karabakh’s salvation, while now Armenia should be saved. The opposition politicians stated they had reached an agreement and elaborated an action plan. The opposition believes it is necessary to establish a Movement, Central Committee and its regional bodies. By the way, New Times party leader Aram Karapetyan suggested that the Committee should be called “Armenia”, by analogy with Karabakh Committee. According to Vazgen Manukyan, the issue referring to the establishment of the Committee will be settled within two weeks.

In his turn, Republic Party leader Aram Sargsyan stated opposition should be united to succeed. Besides, addressing those present he said only the one who believed in victory could win.

Both the leadership and opposition believe favorable settlement of the Karabakh issue also depends on political processes in Armenia. However, the thing is that the authorities and opposition estimate the connection in different way. According to the leadership, the opposition should not raise the issues connected with illegal arrests, falsifications in the course of the elections in the international organizations, while the oppositionists believe the Karabakh conflict settlement will be favorable for us in case Armenia becomes a democratic country, and yet more democratic than Azerbaijan (on the base of information provided by Aravot and Haykakan Jamanak newspapers 09.12.05.)
