IRNA chief urges need for media ties with Armenia

Managing Director of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) Ahmad Khademolmelleh in a meeting with an Armenian media delegation here Sunday said that there should be direct media ties between Iran and Armenia.

He added that unfortunately, news and information about Armenia are released through the western media.

The Armenian delegation comprising the managing director of Independent Armenian News Agency (ARMINFO), deputy managing director of Armen Press, editors in chief of Aravot, AZG and Haikakan Zhamanak dailies conferred with Khademolmelleh on issues of mutual interest.

Addressing the meeting, IRNA chief referred to the role of media in the West in steering public opinion and said that the West has made an extensive investment in its media.

He added that in the world of today, the West pursues its targets, particularly in less developed countries, through such media.

“The two countries can safeguard themselves against news vulnerability through close cooperation and proper exchange of information in the field of communication.

“In the age of industries, the number of industrial plants was the criterion for assessment of the progress made in the countries. But today, in the age of communication, it depends upon the production of information,” added IRNA chief.

Khademolmelleh hoped that Iran and Armenia would soon establish themselves on the regional and international media scene.

“Iran has achieved good progress in the past years. On the domestic scene, the media are doing a good job. Meanwhile, we are promoting our media on the international scene,” he added.

Khademolmelleh referred to the activity of the School of Media Studies affiliated to IRNA and said, “There are plans to conduct research on the latest journalistic achievements made in the media school.”
He proposed exchange of students and instructors between this school and the Armenian media.

Meanwhile, he declared his readiness for establishment of an IRNA news base in Armenia and the two sides agreed on dispatch of an IRNA experts delegation to Armenia as the first step towards news exchange.

After the meeting, members of the Armenian media delegation toured the agency’s news room and were briefed on the trend of news release.
