Armenia was not informed about rise in gas prices

The ArmRosgazprom Company has not been officially notified about new tariffs for gas imported from Russia to Armenia or about such a possibility, the spokeswoman for the company Shushan Sardaryan told a REGNUM correspondent.

ArmRosgazprom is an exclusive gas provider in Armenia. 45% shares of the company belong to the Armenian government, the same amount belongs to the Russian Gazprom Company, and 10% are owned by ITERA Group.

The Armenian Energy Ministry told REGNUM that it does not obtain information about a possible rise in prices for the Russian gas.

Meanwhile, on November 28, the Russian “Rossijskaya Gazeta” (RG) reported that at the recent Russian-Armenian talks in Moscow the Russian party officially notified Armenia about double increase in gas price. According to the source, Armenian Ambassador in Russia Armen Smbatyan told the press that instead of $56 a thousand cubic meters of gas would cost $120. At the same time, writes the state-owned RG, Iran and Armenia have recently approved the project of extending the Iranian-Armenian gas pipeline to Georgia and Ukraine. “Through this pipeline Moldavia would evidently buy the Iranian gas, because the Russian gas will be twice more expensive for it too. However, Iran is inclined to give price preferences for the CIS countries, including an opportunity for them to receive gas in exchange [for goods]: it could weaken the monopoly of the Russian gas in most neighbor countries,” believes RG.
