EVERYTHING READY FOR REFERENDUM

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 25, ARMENPRESS: Armenia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) said today voter lists were fixed in all polling stations around the country, two days before the referendum date, as required by the law. It also said the overall number of eligible voters is 2,245,273.

High turnout is a necessary condition for the adoption of the constitutional amendments. To pass they need to be backed by at least one third of all eligible voters, which makes 748,000 votes. Tsovinar Khachatrian, a spokeswoman for the CEC said there are 41 territorial election constituencies and 1,922 polling stations. She said 3,334,300 ballots were printed and will be distributed to election commission a day before the referendum.

She said polling stations are set up for some prisons and for all military units. She also said 6,386 Armenians, out of around 160,000 who hold old Soviet passports, have replaced them with new ones in the last month. Holders of old passports are not allowed to vote. She also said 47 local and 7 foreign media were registered for covering the referendum, including France Press, Reuters, Spanish EFE, Russian media.

Armenians citizens who are in foreign countries, there are 18,500 of them, can vote in embassies and consulates. Preliminary results are expected ten hours after the end of referendum. The CEC will announce preliminary results no later than 28 hours after the end of the polling. She said protocols of local election commissions will be e-mailed to CEC.
