CENTENNIAL OF AIRCRAFT DESIGNER ARTEM MIKOYAN CEREMONIALLY MARKED IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 17. ARMINFO. The National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (NASA) has ceremonially marked the centennial of aircraft designer Artem Mikoyan today. Armenian Defense Minister Serge Sargsyan opened the solemn sitting. In his speech, the minister call Artem Mikoyan a genius who brought glory to his country.

In his turn, NASA President Fadey Sargsyan said that the whole world use the achievements based on the inventions of A. Mikopyan. “He was recognized a great aircraft designer no only in his Motherland, but also abroad,” Sargsyan said.

Deputy Director General of “MiG” Corporation Andrey Garasev said that MiF has no match in the world. The number of this aircraft is over 60,000 at present. Garasev said that MiG Corporation has instituted a Artem Mikoyan Medal, which will be awarded to Fadey Sargsyan. After the sitting, the participants attended ceremonial opening of the Monument for Artem Mikoyan at Erebuni airport.

Artem Mikoyan was born in the Armenian village of Sanahin in 1905. In 1923 he moved to Rostov-on-Don where he studied in the Military Aviation Academy. His first plane “Oktyabrenok” Mikoyan created with his mates. In 1940 under leadership of Artem Mikoyan jointly with Mikhail Gurevich MiG-3 fighter was created. In the war period, Mikoyan designed fighters with high flight and technical data, including E-250. After war, the speed and the height demonstrated by MiG-15 and MiG-29 had been records for a long time. High-speech and supersonic fighters were designed, which had been in the armament of the air forces for a long time, including MiG-9, MiG-15, MiG- 17 (reaching the sound speed), MiG-19 (the first serial native supersonic fighter), MiG-21. Among Mikoyan’s inventions are such aircraft as airspace plane built late in 60s; MiG-25 the fastest and the highest- flying titanic fighter . MiGs have been in the armament of the native and foreign air forces for over 50 years. Mikoyan’s fighters showed 55 world records. Artem Mikoyan died on December 9 1970.
