EUROPEAN INTEGRATION POLITICAL PRIORITY FOR ARMENIA

YEREVAN, November 1. /ARKA/. European integration is a political priority for Armenia, and the study of Belgian experience will be of benefit to the country, Speaker of the RA Parliament Artur Baghdasaryan stated at his meeting with Chairwoman of the Belgian Senate Ann Mary Lizin.

Speaker Baghdasaryan informed the guest of important political events in Armenia, pointing out the importance of a positive result of the referendum on the draft constitution for democratic development in the country. The sides also pointed out the importance of consolidating the bilateral parliamentary ties, which will greatly contribute to European integration. The sides also discussed the possibility of a regional conference with Belgium’s participation in 2006, which is to discuss issues of establishing regional relations.

Lizin proposed assisting a meeting between the Speakers of the Armenian and Turkish Parliaments scheduled for January 2006, the agenda of which is top include issues of Armenian-Turkish relations. Baghdasaryan said that he is supportive of the improvement of the Armenian-Turkish relations. He stated that the current problems between the two countries must be a subject of open and public discussions and aimed at the future. Baghdasaryan stressed the importance of equal involvement of all the countries of the region in economic programs, pointing out the role of the EU’s assistance in ruling out double standards.
