Sport Digest: Armenian pair skates into Olympic qualification

Football

Armenia’s almost totally renovated U-19s team was unsuccessful in the first round of the qualifying tournament for the 2005/2006 European Cup being held in the Latvian capital of Riga October 17-23.

Armenia, included in Group 12, lost in their first match to Serbia & Montenegro – 0-1.

In their second match on Thursday Armenia were defeated by their coevals from Ukraine 2-1 and lost the chance to qualify for the next round.

Armenia will play the host nation Latvia in their last match on Sunday, but it will be only the matter of honor for Samvel Petrosyan’s charges.

Meanwhile, Armenia’s full nation team after beating Andorra 3-0 in the last World Cup qualifier registered progress on the FIFA ratings list – from the 115th on the list Armenia went up to the 109th spot. Armenia’s highest position on the list, since 1992, was 79th. (A1 Plus)

Chess

Armenia’s men team will participate in the 6th world team championships to be held in the Israeli city of Beer Sheba from October 31 to November 11. The strongest teams of the world will participate in the tournament, including the men’s and women’s teams from China, men’s teams from Russia, the United States, Cuba, the Netherlands, Israel, Ukraine and Georgia.

The ice dancing couple will represent Armenia in 2006 Olympic Games

The Armenian team will include six grandmasters – Levon Aronyan (with an individual coefficient of 2724), Vladimir Hakobyan (2707), Karen Asryan (2645), Rafael Vahanyan (2614), Smbat Lputyan (2614) and Ashot Anastasyan (2596). Figure-skating

Armenia’s figure-skating pair Anastasia Grebyonkina and Vazgen Azroyan (ice dancing) has earned the right to participate in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin (Italy).

Participating in an Olympic rating tournament in the Austrian capital of Vienna the Armenian figure-skaters finished 5th. The top six finishers in the tournament received the right to perform in Turin.

After the opening section of the tournament – compulsory dance – Grebyonkina-Azroyan occupied the 11th place. The crucial section for them was the sport dance, after performing which the Armenian pair went up to the sixth place.

Then, after performing a free dance and finishing 3rd in that section the Armenian figure-skaters finally occupied the fifth spot.

As of today, four Armenian athletes have earned the right to participate in the upcoming Winter Olympics. They are skiers Edmond Khachatryan and Hovhannes Sargsyan, and the mentioned figure-skating pair. Armenia also has one place in alpine skiing. And two bobsleigh pairs of Armenian athletes residing in the United States also still have an opportunity to become participants in the Turin games. (Armenpress)
