`Armenia should recognize Turkish border´

ANKARA – Turkish Daily News

Murat Mercan, head of the Turkish delegation at the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, yesterday said Armenia should recognize the Turkish border.

A report on the constitutional reform process in Armenia was discussed at the assembly’s meeting. During the debates, Mercan referred to a “western Armenia” expression in the preamble of the Armenian constitution and said the expression meant Armenia considers this region of Turkey theirs. “Eastern Anatolia” is widely accepted as ‘western Armenia’ by the Armenians. While Armenia wants good neighborly relations under international law, it does not recognize the Turkish border,” said Mercan, who is also a deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

A parliamentarian speaking on behalf of the Armenian delegation, however, called on Turkey to establish diplomatic relations with Yerevan.
