17 138 scripts are kept in Matenadaran. 14 000 of them are written in the Armenian language and about 3000 – in foreign languages. Matenadaran is the biggest institute-depository of the Armenian scripts.
In the words of Director of Matenadaran Sen Arevshatyan, the scripts are either purchased with the funds of a sponsor or gifted. On the occasion of the 1600-th anniversary of the invention of the Armenian written language an exhibition dedicated to the life of Mesrop Mashtots, invention of the alphabet and literature of the Gold Age. The work of Hrachya Acharyan entitled “Armenian written language” will be republished.
The events will start in the monastery of Aramas in Nagorno Karabakh in June, mass processions and meetings will be held in Echmiadzin, Vagharshapat and Oshakan. Director of the Matenadaran’s Friends Benevolent Foundation Arshak Banuchyan considers that the 1600-th anniversary is a good occasion for the stimulation of the development of Armenology and carrying out of the Matenadaran programs.
