AGBU Responds to Lawsuit by Istanbul Patriarch; Seeks Transfer of Case to Federal Court

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) has responded to the lawsuit filed by His Beatitude Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan, which seeks the prevention of the closure of the AGBU Melkonian Educational Institute at the end of this fiscal year. Two law firms, one in San Francisco and the other in Washington, DC, served a “Notice of Removal” from the state court to a federal court. The law firms, Artshuler, Berzon, Nussbaum, Rubin and Demain, of San Francisco, and Baach, Robinson and Lewis PLLC, will defend the AGBU in the case. The lawyers for the petitioner intend to subpoena Louise Manoogian Simone as the first witness in the trial. The case against the AGBU is expected to last a long time, maybe years. The first court hearing is scheduled for March 15.
