US AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA HELD A RANGE OF MEETINGS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF ARMENIAN POLITICAL PARTIES

Today John Evans met with representatives of Dashnaktsutyun party, yesterday – with representatives of National Unity and Republic opposition parties, Aravot newspaper writes. As reported by Yerkir newspaper site, today US Ambassador to Armenia John Evans met with supreme representatives of Dashnaktsutyun party, which forms part of the ruling coalition. At the same time Aravot newspaper reports that yesterday Evans’ car was parked next to the building of the National Unity opposition party office for over an hour and a half. The same car, according to the newspaper data, was seen next to the office of Republic opposition party. A day ago the Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper reported that the Ambassador had three meetings with Armenian Parliament Speaker Artur Baghdasarian (leader of Orinats Yerkir party, which forms part of the ruling coalition). The newspaper supposes that the Ambassador and the Speaker discussed questions referring to the coming discussion of the issue of sending Armenian military specialists to Iraq. However, the National Assembly press service reported nothing about these meetings. The Yerkir newspaper reported that at today’s meeting with Dashnaktsutyun questions referring to the domestic situation, the Karabakh settlement, opening the Armenian-Turkish border and sending an Armenian contingent to Iraq were considered. This confirms by implication that sending Armenian military to Iraq could have been subject of discussion at the Parliament meeting. Representatives of Dashnaktsutyun party drew the Ambassador’s attention to the security issues of the Armenian communities in Iraq and other Arab countries, where Armenians may become victims of Islamic radicals.
