UCLA November conference to be dedicated to Armenian Jerusalem

YEREVAN (YERKIR) – UCLA’s Modern Armenian History Studies will hold its 15th conference on November 6-7 dedicated to the Armenian presence in Jerusalem and Holy places.

Armenians appear in those places from the early years of Christianity. Over 20 Armenian and foreign scientists from around the world will attend the conference organized by UCLA professor Richard Hovhanisian, and chaired by archbishop Torgom Manukian, Armenian patriarch of Jerusalem.

Arts and architecture of the Armenian Jerusalem, the manuscripts of the St. Jacob monastery, history of the Armenian patriarchy and Armenian district of Jerusalem, as well as the relations between the Armenian church with other Christian churches will be presented at the conference. The history of the Armenian community of Jerusalem during the 1915 Armenian Genocide and the years following it will also be presented.

Armenia will be represented by historians Albert Kharatian (report titled “Relations between Armenian and Greek Churches in Jerusalem and the Armenian Patriarchy of Constantinople in the 17th Century”) and Emma Kostandian (“Mkrtich Khrimian and Armenian Patriarchy of Jerusalem”). An exhibition on Jerusalem will accompany the conference.
