MINISTER OF JUSTICE OF EQUATORIAL GUINEA INTENDS TO DEMAND FROM 26 TO 86 YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT FOR 8 SOUTH-AFRICANS AND 6 ARMENIAN PILOTS

YEREVAN, AUGUST 24. ARMINFO. Equatorial Guinea’s attorney-general made a shock announcement on Monday that he would seek the death penalty for South African Nick du Toit, the leader of a group of alleged mercenaries accused of plotting to overthrow the government of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema.

According to France Press, Jose olo Obono, Minister of Justice of Equatorial Guinea, also said on the first day of the trial of Du Toit and 17 other alleged coup plotters that he would call for prison terms ranging from 26 years to 86 years for the South African’s co- defendants.

The trial is being held in the Banapa conference centre in Malabo, the country’s capital on the island of Bioko.

The South African government has dispatched an observer mission

Du Toit told the court on Monday that he had recruited staff and taken charge of logistics for a coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea.

Commenting on the report, RA Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian told reporters: “We should wait and not making hasty optimistic forecasts about the trial.” He reported that an Armenian delegation has for the third time left for Equatorial Guinea. Oskanian expressed a hope that the trial will result in a decision in favor of the Armenian pilots.

RA President Robert Kocharian and Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II requested the authorities of Equatorial Guinea to release the Armenian pilots.
