YEREVAN, AUGUST 2. ARMINFO. The HIV-infected registered in Armenia by Aug 1, 2004, numbered 283 people, 269 of them are Armenian citizens.
According to data of the Center for AIDS Prevention in Armenia, majority of cases are men, 207 people (76.9%), 62 women (23.1%) and 4 children (1.5%). Majority of the infected are at the age of 20-39 (78.8%). 117 people (51/8%) were infected through intravenous injections, 65 people (39.4%) through heterosexual contacts and other cases from mother to children, through blood and homosexual contacts. According to the Center, AIDS-patients in Armenia number 50 people, with 42 death cases having been registered by present. It should be noted that the greatest number of the infected and deaths were registered in 2002, 41 and 9 respectively, Majority of intravenous injections were registered among men, who were infected in CIS (Russian ad the Ukraine). 93.5% of women were infected through homosexual intercourse. Majority of the HIV-patients were registered in Yerevan (49.1%), the second in succession is Lori region (9%).
However, a methodological estimation carried out by the Center among the population of the risk group showed that the real figures of HIV-infected 10 times exceed the registered cases. Factually, in Armenia some 2,800 and 3,000 infected are calculated.
