armenialiberty: Kocharian Starts Official Visit To Lebanon

(AFP) – Armenian President Robert Kocharian arrived in Beirut Monday on a three-day visit during which he is due to meet with Lebanese officials and leaders of the Armenian community, the largest in the Arab world.

Kocharian, accompanied by his wife, would be holding talks with Lebanese President Emile Lahoud on bilateral relations and the situation in the Middle East, including in Iraq, officials said. The Armenian president would also meet with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

Lebanon hosts the Arab world’s largest Armenian community, with about 200,000 members, and Kocharian was scheduled to meet church and other leaders. The community has government ministers and parliament members, and is very active in the business sector.

Kocharian made a first visit to Lebanon in 2000. The Lebanese president, whose mother and wife are of Armenian origin, made a trip to Yerevan in 2002. Hariri also visited Armenia in April, where he signed a series of agreements for bilateral economic and cultural cooperation.
