arminfo: AZERI MPs TO DISCUSS POSSIBILITIES OF ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER OPENING

YEREVAN, APRIL 6. ARMINFO. The Azeri Milli Mejlis is to consider today the issue of Turkey’s intention to open its border with Armenia, the leader of the Yurddash party Mais Safarli tells the 525 newspaper (Baku).

Safarli says that even though the Turkish government is heavily pressured in the matter the border will not be opened. “This step i against Turkey’s interests. For over a century the Armenians has held an anti-Turkish policy of alleged Armenian Genocide. They try to discredit Turkey in the eyes of the international community. Turkey cannot open its doors to such a neighbor.”

Safarli’s deputy Zahid Oruj says that some circles are simply trying turn the border opening reports to their advantage. Some are stealthily undermining Azeri-Turkish relations. Oruj condemns the people who already today are accusing Turkey of treason and are reiterating the events of early XX. Pro-opening statements by some members of the Erdogan cabinet are not yet a ground for inferring Erdogan’s pro-Armenian orientation. At the same time it is not right to link with Azerbaijan Turkey’s closing its border with Armenia. “One should not forget that all hostile steps against Azerbaijan are aimed against Turkey as well.” “The opening of the Turkish-Armenian border is a threat to the whole region.”
