panarmenian: KARS RESIDENTS AWAIT OPENING ARMENIAN BORDER, TURKISH PRESS WRITES

One of the main problems of the Kars region of Turkey is the issue of opening the Akkaya checkpoint, situated at the border with Armenia, Milliyet Turkish newspaper writes. Kars residents await opening the border, which was closed in 1993 to please Azerbaijan after the beginning of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the article notes. “The lock on border gate makes automobile and rail communication with Armenia and the Caucasus, as well as with Turkic-speaking countries and China impossible,” the newspaper writes. The opening of the frontier point, which is 66 km away from Kars, will make active trade with Armenia and other countries possible, which will lead to economic development of that backward region of Turkey, the article says.
