Numbering 60 000 people, Armenian community of Turkey is going to take advantage of the legislative reforms being carried out in the country before the entry to the EU and open an Armenian broadcasting station FM station in Istanbul. As reported by Aksham Turkish newspaper, the present initiative belongs to Akos weekly Armenian edition. “We aim at preserving the Armenian culture”, – Akos’s editor-in-chief Hrant Dink stated. Although the opening demands about $150 000, he considers that their project will be realised as early as next year. It would be interesting to note that in response to the given initiative the Turkish Radio and Telecasting Supreme Council stated that according to the Lausanne treaty, Armenians of Turkey have had the right for opening their own broadcasting station since 1923. The council members explained that the recent changes refer to the Kurds, who reside in Turkey and are not mentioned in the treaty.
