Members of the Armenian armed forces are destroying the 42km long Mehri
railway connecting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with Azerbaijan,
political analyst Mubariz Ahmadoghlu, head of the Centre of Political
Innovation and Technology, told AssA-Irada.

He said that the issue of the Mehri corridor is being examined
seriously in the Armenian press. Ahmadoghlu underlined that the
Armenian opposition wants to use Armenian President Kocharian’s
proposal to add the issue of the Mehri corridor to the agenda for
negotiations of the Upper Garabagh conflict against him.

According to the political analyst, in order to deprive the opposition
of this argument the Kocharian wants to destroy the Mehri railway
so the issue does not enter the peace talks. Ahmadoghlu said,
“Kocharian wants to solve two problems in one move – on one hand
he makes the opposition keep silent, on the other hand he changes
the owner of the property. The Mehri section of the railway is the
property of independent Azerbaijan. Kocharian’s unilateral interference
in the issue should be regarded as a violation of legal norms until
Armenian-Azerbaijani relations improve.” Ahmadoghlu thinks that the
Azerbaijani public will soon react to this information and state
officials are likely to attempt to discuss the issue and come to an
appropriate decision at the Council of Europe.
