spacewar: Senior Armenian general in first top-level visit to Turkey

YEREVAN (AFP) Nov 15, 2003
A senior Armenian military official has headed for Turkey for the first ever visit at such a high level between the two countries which have no diplomatic links, an Armenian spokesman said Saturday.
Chief of general staff General Mikhail Arutunian left Yerevan late Friday for Istanbul where he is to attend NATO meetings and manoeuvres in which Turkey is participating, defence ministry spokesman Seiran Shakhsuvarian said.

Turkey is a full member of the Atlantic alliance, and Armenia is one of several former Soviet republics that regularly take part in NATO exercises as part of the alliance’s Partnership for Peace programme.

“There is nothing extraordinary about this visit. “It is a return visit after three senior Turkish officers visited us last June with observer status when NATO carried out manoeuvres here,” Shakhsuvarian said.

Relations between Armenia and Turkey have been chilly since the 1915 massacres of hundreds of thousands of Armenians living in what is now Turkey under the Ottoman empire, with Ankara refusing to accept Yerevan’s description of the event as a genocide.
