armenpress: LINCY-FUNDED APARTMENT BUILDING PROJECT ACCOMPLISHED

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS: A senior official of Armenian urban ministry said today a program of building and reconstructing apartments in Armenia’s earthquake zone with a total budget of $45 million has been accomplished. The money was part of a $150 million grant, donated to Armenia by a US-based Lincy Foundation of billionaire Kirk Kerkorian. Vladimir Sardarian, head of a department supervising construction in the earthquake zone, said the project was among the most successful ones implemented in the region over the 12 years.

On Lincy money 143 buildings were reinforced and built in the zone, of which 85 in Gyumri, the others in Spitak, Vanadzor and other earthquake-stricken regions. The government released 1.5 billion Drams for connecting the newly built houses to engineering services. The project was implemented for two years and instead of 4,000 apartments, originally planed, only 3,670 were built, as the newly built apartments were furnished with individual gas-heaters.

Sardarian said the 330 apartments will be built next year, for which the budget has earmarked 5 billion Drams. Apart from this project, the USAID-funded Urban Institute has distributed a total of 6,600 house purchasing certificates among homeless families allowing them to buy apartments at local real estate market and about 80 apartments were built on pan-Armenian Hayastan Foundation’s funds.
