arminfo: ANCIENT CITY RESTORATION UNDER WAY IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 6. ARMINFO. Restoration of an ancient city believed to have been built 6,000 years ago in currently under way in Yerevan’s Shengavit district.

Talking to ARMINFO, Director of the Research Center for Armenia’s Cultural-Historical Heritage Hakob Simonyan reported that research results show the city to have been built in the fifth millennium B.C. According to him, it was a developed urban center with a population of several thousand people. Articles found as a result of excavations show that the city had a developed copper-smelting industry. Simonyan also reported that remains of ancient horses were found at the excavations site, which is the first such case in the Caucasus. He stressed that lab analyses made in Germany showed that the remains date back to the same period as the city. This can suggest the existence of an ancient horse-breeding center there.

Simonyan reported that excavations began there as far back as the 1930s, but were suspended for lack of funding. The work was only resumed on September 10, 2003, due to the British Embassy’s assistance. A total of 4,000 USD have been allocated for the work. British Ambassador to Armenia Torda Abbot-Watt stressed the importance of the excavations results. She pointed out that the restoration of this cultural-historical monument will contribute to the development of tourism in Armenia.
