armeniadiaspora: Archbishop Helps Honor International Figures

Yerevan, October 29: Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), led a delegation of Armenian Church leaders to the Appeal of Conscience Foundation’s 2003 annual awards ceremony. Rabbi Arthur Schneier founded the Appeal of Conscience Foundation in 1965. The interfaith coalition of business and religious leaders works around the globe to promote peace, tolerance, and resolution of ethnic conflicts. The Primate serves as vice president on the board of the Foundation.
In his role as vice president of the group, the Primate helped the group honor two international dignitaries. Jose Maria Aznar Lopez, the president of Spain, was presented with the Appeal of Conscience World Statesman Award for serving as a “courageous leader and champion of democracy, freedom, and tolerance.”

Dr. Josef Ackermann, chairman of the Group Executive Committee at Deutsche Bank, was given the Appeal of Conscience Award for “applying his enterprising spirit in the world of finance to further tolerance, dialogue, and international cooperation.”

“It is important that we recognize such leaders, who work to build a peaceful society that embraces and welcomes diverse faiths,” the Primate said. Joining Archbishop Barsamian at the gala on Tuesday, October 14, 2003, in the New York Hilton was Bishop Vicken Aykazian, legate and ecumenical officer of the Eastern Diocese; Oscar Tatosian, member of the Diocesan Council; and Haig Ariyan, a member of the Armenian Church Endowment Fund Board of Trustees and an executive at Deutsche Bank.
