OSCE Chairman: New Window Opens For Settlement Of Karabakh Conflict

Yerevan, October 22: “Today, after the elections in Armenia and Azerbaijan, a new window opens for the negotiations concerning the settlement of the Karabakh conflict”. OSCE Chairman, Foreign Minister of Netherlands Jaap De Hoop Scheffer told the journalists in the airport Zvartnots before leaving Yerevan. During his visit to Yerevan he has met with the leadership of Armenia, as well as with representatives of NGOs. The foreign minister left Yerevan for Tbilisi, and then he will visit Baku. Within the framework of the visits to the neighbor countries he intends to meet with the presidents of Georgia and Azerbaijan.

According to Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, in Yerevan he has held a very important meeting with the President of Armenia Robert Kocharian. Nagorno Karabakh was the main theme of the talk. The foreign minister of the Netherlands stressed that to present the sides with new elements of proposals concerning the settlement of the Karabakh conflict was not in his mission. He reminded that the OSCE only stimulates the negotiating process, and is not a negotiating party. “I hope that the OSCE Minsk Group’s cochairmen will make new proposals soon. During my visit to Azerbaijan I also intend to say the new president of Azerbaijan that the European Union, Council of Europe and the OSCE want to see the issue of NagornoKarabakh solved for good. For the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan took part in the negotiations together”, the OSCE chairman said.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer also informed the journalists that them of his meetings with the representatives of NGOs was the issue of freedom of mass media in Armenia, in particular, the issue of return the air to the TV company A1+. “As I was told this problem may be turns on the issue of competition. In this case we may appeal to legal bodies for final solution of this issue”, he said. According to him, the president of Armenia has invited the OSCE to carry out a monitoring of the problem connected with the TV company A1+.
