Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese, traveled to
Istanbul this month to take part in the 50th anniversary celebration of Holy
Cross Seminary (Tbrevank), of which he is an alumnus.

The Primate was in Istanbul from August 8 through August 16, 2003.

Along with celebrating the Holy Cross Seminary — which was opened on
January 24, 1954, by Patriarch Karekin I Khatchatourian — the Primate and
Bishop Vicken Aykazian, legate and ecumenical officer of the Eastern
Diocese, met with His All Holiness Bartholomew I, the Ecumenical Patriarch
and Archbishop of Constantinople.

The Primate relayed the greetings from His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos
of All Armenians, and discussed with Patriarch Bartholomew a future trip to
Istanbul by the Catholicos.

The Primate also met with His Beatitude Archbishop Mesrob II Mutafyan, the
Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, who gave him a tour of the newly
renovated Patriarchate building, which was damaged during a recent
earthquake and welcomed them to his residence for a special dinner.

During the trip to Istanbul, the Primate and Bishop Aykazian were among a
handful of people who attended a dinner hosted by Dr. David Arnett, counsel
general of the United States of America in Istanbul.

The Primate and Bishop Aykazian also visited the Holy Savior Armenian
Hospital in Istanbul and met with the hospital’s leaders, and paid their
respects at three Armenian cemeteries in the region.
