armenpress: RESTORATION OF ZVARTNOTS TEMPLE NEARS COMPLETION

YEREVAN, AUGUST 19, ARMENPRESS: Mary Danielian, a local architect supervising the restoration of a medieval Armenian temple of Zvartnots, said the 179 million worth project is nearing completion. The restoration, funded by a US-based Lincy Foundation, kicked off in 2002 September.

She said an exhibition devoted to the temple will be organized in a nearby museum, built yet in 1973. It was also repaired.

Zvartnots Cathedral (Church of Guardian Angels) was built in the VII century and destroyed by an earthquake in the tenth century, but still does not cease to attract and delight visitors. This extraordinary triple-tiered structure, whose sculptured capitals with their motifs of eagles, grapes, leaves and pomegranates lie in ruins in the middle of an arid wasteland.

Zvartnots is considered the masterpiece of Armenian church architecture. Christian churches (303 AD) and the seat of the Supreme Patriarch – Catholicons of all Armenians. On the territory of the complex there is the Cathedral with its Treasury and Museum, Armenian Spiritual Seminary and Academy.
