Los Angeles, CA – At the request of the Turkish Consulate General of Los
Angeles, representatives of the Armenian Assembly of America, Armenian
General Benevolent Union (AGBU), and the Western Diocese of the Armenian
Church of North America met Tuesday with a Turkish Foreign Ministry
official, Ambassador Ecvet Tezcan. Turkey’s Los Angeles Vice-Consul Ozgur
Altan accompanied the Ambassador.

During the 75-minute meeting, Ambassador Tezcan briefed the group on his
mission to establish a dialogue with the Armenian Diaspora not only in
America, but also throughout the world. Prior to the Los Angeles meeting,
Tezcan met with representatives of leading Armenian-American organizations
in New York, including the Armenian Assembly, the AGBU, and the Eastern
Diocese of the Armenian Church of America.

The Armenian-American group underscored the community message that
Armenian-Americans are united in their insistence that the Republic of
Turkey deal with the issue of the Armenian Genocide, establish normal
relations with Armenia that are not dictated by the Azerbaijani position on
Nagorno Karabakh and end restrictions and pressure on the Armenian
minorities in Turkey.

“This was an important opportunity for our community to express our issues
face-to-face with senior representatives of the Turkish Government,” said
Archbishop Hovnan Derderian of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of
North America.

The Ambassador told the organizational representatives that he appreciated
the opportunity to meet and establish dialogue with the Armenian Diaspora.

Other leading Armenian-American organizations in the Los Angeles area also
met with the Ambassador during his visit to Southern California.
