Five Armenian tennis players representing five different countries were among 128 players competing in the French Open, which began this week in Paris. Only two survived the second round.

Andre Agassi of USA (seeded 2) easily beat Slovakian tennis player Karol Beck (unseeded) 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. David Nalbandyan (seeded 8) representing Argentina defeated Albert Montanes (unseeded) of Spain 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

But the best achievement of the first round matches among Armenians was Sargis Sargsyan (unseeded) of Yerevan, who upset sixth-seed Andy Roddick of the United States 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Two Armenian women also reached the second round at Roland Garros.

Marie-Gayane Mikaelian from Switzerland (unseeded) beat Angelique Widjaja (unseeded) of Indonesia 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria (seeded 15) won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 over Australian Alicia Molik (unseeded).

Agassi continues his quest for the title after a five-set second-round victory over Mario Ancic (unseeded) of Croatia 5-7, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

In the third round Agassi will play against Xavier Malisse (seeded 26) of Belgium.

Maleeva has advanced with a victory over Yevgenia Kulikovskaya (unseeded) of Russia, 6-3, 6-2.

In the third round Maleeva will meet with Italian Rita Grande (unseeded).

Nalbandian was eliminated by Nicolas Coutelot (unseeded) of France 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 1-6 and Sargsyan put out by Victor Hanescu (unseeded) of Romania, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 2-6.

Nalbandian and Sargsyan earned €20,800 and collected 7 race points each.

Second round was ill-fated for Marie-Gayane Mikaelian as she had to face the current best tennis player in women’s tennis Serena Williams of USA. The result was predictable, a victory for Williams, 6-3, 6-2.

With results from France pending, Agassi is still No. 1 in the ATP rankings with 372 points. His nearest opponent is Roger Federer with 311. David Nalbandian holds 17th position with 134 race points and Sargis Sargsyan is 44th with 74 points.

In WTA rankings Magdalena Maleeva holds 15th place with 1600 race points meanwhile Marie-Gayane Mikaelian is on the 38th position with 880 points.
