armenpress: VOROTAN-ARPA TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION TO BE FINISHED IN JULY

YEREVAN, MAY 23, ARMENPRESS: Armenian government said Thursday construction of a major, 21.6 km long tunnel Vorotan-Arpa will be accomplished in July. The tunnel will allow to take annually some 165 million cubic meters of waters of the River Arpa to Armenia’s biggest lake Sevan through another, Arpa Sevan tunnel. The additional waters are supposed not only to help preserve the lake’s today’s level, but also to increase it.

Construction of Vorotan-Arpa tunnel was started back in 1981 but was brought to halt in 1992, a year after Armenia regained its independence from former Soviet Union due to absence of funds. It resumed in 1997 with some 500 workers involved. Construction is supervised by Armenian urban-planning ministry.
