YEREVAN, Armenia (AP)–More than 400 international and local observers
will monitor parliamentary elections on May 25, election officials
said Saturday.

Observers from 10 international and 26 local organizations have been
accredited, according to Artak Sagradian, chairman of Armenia’s
Central Election Commission. Observers will include watchers from the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the
Commonwealth of Independent States, a coalition of former Soviet
states, he said.

Security at next week’s election will be tight, with more than 10,000
police officers deployed, deputy police chief Ovanes Varian said.

The parliamentary elections, which coincide with a referendum on
changes in the former Soviet republic’s constitution, comes after
President Robert Kocharian won re-election in a March vote that
international observers said was marred by irregularities.

The opposition unsuccessfully challenged the presidential election,
alleging widespread ballot-box stuffing and intimidation of opposition
activists.
