David Nalbandian did better in Germany than in Italy.
After his disappointing performance at the Telecom Italia Masters Roma tournament May 5- 11, David Nalbandian improved his game at the Tennis Masters in Hamburg, Germany. The tournament concludes Sunday.

Nalbandian, seeded 8, reached the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win of No. 9 seed Rainer Schuettler from Germany.

Before reaching Schuettler Nalbandian defeated Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard in the first round (6-3, 6-3) and another representative of France Anthony Dupuis (5-7, 6-2, 6-3) in the second round.

In quarterfinals Nalbandian was to face Fernando Gonzalez from Chili (seeded 15), who ousted tournament favorite Lleyton Hewitt.

Meanwhile the clay surface of Hamburg wasn’t lucky for Sargis Sargsyan. He escaped the first round with a tough 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty but lost in the second round (1-6, 1-6) to Swiss Roger Federer.

Agassi leads ATP with 372 points is being challenged by Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrerois with 307.

Nalbandian is 30th with 89 points and Sargsyan is 48th with 64.

WTA

Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian, representing Switzerland, lost 3-6, 2-6 in the first round of WTA tournament in Rome to Svetlana Kuznetsova from Russia.

Unlike Mikaelian, Magdalena Maleeva-Berberian of Bulgaria passed the first round beating Silvia Farina Elia from Italy 6-4 , 6-4 but lost 6-4, 4-6, 5-7 in the second to Tina Pisnik from Slovenia.

In WTA rankings Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian moved down from 35th to 36th place with 871 points.

Magdalena Maleeva-Berberian is 14th with 1624 points.

Football (Armenian Cup)

Shirak has won the Armenian Cup, with a 2-1 victory May 11 over last year’s champions, Pyunik.

Pyunik owned the first half, getting its goal in the 10th minute from Karl Lombe.

And indeed it held the edge until the 75th minute when Tigran Davtyan equalized for Shirak, followed 10 minutes later by Yervand Hakobyan’s winning goal.

The victory was Shirak’s third Cup championship and thwarted Pyunik’s hopes of winning the title for a third straight season.
