YEREVAN, Armenia

The deadline for withdrawal from Armenia’s parliamentary election
campaign passed Wednesday with 21 parties registered to compete in
nationwide balloting and more than 350 candidates running in
individual races, electoral officials said.

The 21 parties will compete for 75 of the 131 parliament seats in the
May 25 elections, with seats assigned to candidates from the parties
in proportion to the number of votes they win in the nationwide
balloting. Voters will fill the other 56 seats by choosing
representatives from their local electoral districts.

The Central Election Commission said it denied registration to two
parties and about 100 individuals that applied.

The parliamentary elections, which coincide with a referendum on
changes in the former Soviet republic’s constitution, comes after
President Robert Kocharian won re-election in a March vote that
international observers said was marred by irregularities.

The opposition unsuccessfully challenged the presidential election,
alleging widespread ballot-box stuffing and intimidation of
opposition activists.
