noyan tapan: 6TH REPUBLICAN `ARNO BABAJANIAN´ CONTEST OF YOUNG PIANISTS TO TAKE PLACE IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN, April 17 (Noyan Tapan). The 6th republican contest of young pianists called “Arno Babajanian” will start in Yerevan on April 26. As many as 51 young performers from the capital and provinces will participate in the contest. The contest has been held every third year ever since 1986. The aim of the contest is to discover new talents among children. The prize-winners of previous contests were enabled to continue their studies at the best music schools abroad. As the chairman of the contest steering committee Gagik Manasian told a press conference on April 16, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th formers of Armenian music schools will participate in the contest, which will be conducted in three stages in two age groups – 5th and 6th formers as well as 7th and 8th formers. Arno Babajanian’s and modern Armenian composers’ music is included in the obligatory programs of the three stages. Besides, the top three prizes, the steering committee has also instituted a number of incentive prizes, including the Arno Babajanian prize. Prizes will also be awarded to the teachers of the children who take the top prizes. The RA Ministry of Culture, Youth Affairs and Sport has allocated 1 mln, 800 thousand drams (about 3,000 USD) for the purpose of organizing the contest this year, which is by 20% more than last year. The sum foreseen for prize-winners will be allocated from the “Arno Babajanian” Fund. The jury of the contest includes the best specialists from the Yerevan State Conservatory, the piano divisions of the country’s music colleges and schools.
